Change a password you know, or recover one you do not. Where self-service reset is enabled you can do it yourself in a couple of minutes.
Go to portal.office.com, open your account settings from the avatar in the top right, and choose to change your password. Nothing else is required.
On the sign-in page choose Forgot my password. Where self-service reset is enabled for your tenant, verification goes to the phone or alternate email you registered.
Three or four unrelated words is stronger than a short password with substituted characters, and far easier to type on a phone. Never reuse a password from another service.
Phone mail apps, tablets, and any desktop client keep the old one and will lock the account out by retrying it. Sign in again on each device after the change.
If the recovery phone or email is out of date, self-service cannot reach you. We reset it after confirming your identity through a separate channel.
If the account is locked rather than just wrong, if verification does not reach you, or if you suspect the password was reset by someone else — that last one is a compromise, not a password problem.
If the fault turns out to be in the Microsoft service rather than your setup, we take it from there — you keep one point of contact.
